What is a Pelmeni?
Dumplings can be found in many shapes and varieties all over the world. Whether it is gyoza in Japan, tortellini in Italy, or humble dropped dumplings in the American South, dumplings will always have a special place in people’s heart as true comfort food.
In Russia, pelmeni is as close to comfort food as it gets. Pieces of dough filled with minced meat such as chicken, beef or pork is usually served with sour cream or sautéed in butter. The average Russian family brings home 2 pounds of pelmeni every month and for good reason! They are extremely convenient to cook and even easier to eat!
Almost as simple as the ingredient listings are their cooking preparation: boil the Pelmeni in heavily salted water for 5 minutes or until they float. Strain the pelmeni and serve with melted butter, sour cream or your favorite sauce. To bring them up a notch, see our recipe for our Beef Dumplings with Mushroom Sauce!
